It's an excellent 100 from Wade but if I was an Aussie I'd be wondering about the vigour of his celebration? Compare that to Stokes at Headingley. The 100 doesn't mean much if you don't go on and win the match. He had XI blokes talking him through his knock, and Archer is a mate from the Hobart T20 team. He’s a twat who talks too much so that others will have a go at him. Some people play better angry. I was like that. Others go to water when challenged. I think the game moved past that stuff when Phil Hughes died. I had a long hard think about how I’d played the game and was horrified at some of my bloosthirsty antics with the pill. We all grow up, just takes some of us a bit longer than others. I’ll get there one day.

I'm sure Ray won't agree, but tying the series is a very decent "backup prize" for England. Australia's long run of not winning here continues. The ashes is what the prize is, Australia deserved it, they did it with a match to spare, BUT every test is important, certainly every series is important, and we all know Australia would've been desperate to at least draw this test and get the series win. Good way to end it for England... I disagree with you saying I’ll disagree lol. I was wondering why they were celebrating WINNING the Ashes after the last game. Back in Bradmans day 2-1 up with one to play means you’ve retained, and have the win to play for. It was a funny summer of cricket. You won the World Cup but it will always have an asterix next to it, we retained the Ashes and wrecked one of the great individual efforts of a player by almost every other batsman playing poorly. Reminds me of 10/11 when Cook made 700 in a series against us here when we were more worried about Strauss at the other end - Cook was just a punk kid McGrath and Lee were going to deal with lol. You didn’t win the series but his play stopped it being a hammering. Brilliant individually, poor as a team. Smith will understand I suspect.

I’m actually feeling that good physically I’m toying around with the idea of playing a game this season. The guys I umpired up in Geraldton (450km north of Perth in the desert on the coast - shithole) have become RL mates I keep in contact with and a couple have offered me a spot in their B grade teams doing whatever I want (1st slip, open the batting with a licence to tee off) if I want a game.
Here’s the thing though. I played my ‘last’ match in 13/14 for a mates team in Victoria. They were short of numbers so I agreed to fill in and made a pretty decent 70 odd not out. Not sure I’d be able to improve on or get close to that now. Would be a chance to play a game in Western Australia though. Decisions decision - Bloody nice to have them again

You've gotta play! Who gives a shit about whether you're as good as before, or even close!
I was a pretty good striker (football) in my early 20s, was never fast, but had a good little burst off the mark, and as they say the first 2 yards in your head anyway, and was just cold blooded in front of goal. I've completely lost that now! But when I do something really good, it feels damn good still.

I’m not so much worried about failing, I’ve still got a good eye and can’t see too many problems making 20 or 30 at that level, but I kinda liked having my last knock as a noteworthy one. I’d been out of the game for 5 or 6 years at that stage so it was all just a nice way to wrap it up.
Time will decide it. If it’s convenient and works out I’ll probably do it just to cement the friendships I made up there. I know a few of the A grade guys are planning on dropping themselves to have a run with me in the magoo’s and there’s normally a stocked esky so it could be a pretty awesome day.
Almost talked myself into it. Just gotta get the misso to tolerate a night in the tent at the ground lol.

I just think any chance to do something good (a goal, a boundary) is worth it for that feeling. But as you've played to a reasonably high level, it may feel different for you...

The more I think about it the more I think about how often I’ve dreamed of being able to. So if I can I should. We’ll see. I’m not at all precious about my performance or the level, it would just be nice to play again and feel those nerves when you walk out to bat. I wouldn’t bowl other than maybe an over of offies if the game gets to junk time.
If I do I’ll definitely get my innings, whatever there is of it recorded. I played just before video cameras were commonly used as anything other than a training tool occasionally and have no footage at all of myself playing.

well it has been a great summer of cricket really enjoyed it and of course the banter on here i just hope i am around for the next Ashes in 2 years should be interesting who we appoint has our next coach and looking forward to some new faces in the squad for New Zealand how did we fare here are my ratings those in bold would make my squad for the next ashes down under
BURNS-7 still needs to improve on his batting but looks a excellent fielder took some great catches DENLY-5 i am not convinced at all about him ok he got 94 but really should have been caught on 0 and at 33 not for me ROOT-6 by his standard not the best with the bat and still not convinced he should be captain STOKES-9 the guy has had a brilliant summer kept us in the series with a brilliant innings BAIRSTOW-4 been really poor with the bat needs to improve big time over the coming couple of years to make my squad so for now will leave him out BUTLER -6 had a good last test and the more red ball cricket he plays i feel will get better CURRAN-5 hard to give a mark on just one test bowled well and i think will be a cert for the next series only 21 WOAKES -5 a pretty average series also it looks like Root doesn't fancy him much with his bowling and on fast tracks in Australia and how vulnerable he is too the short ball is a no for me ARCHER-8 poor effort in Australia last innings and also at a cold Old Trafford looked a bit disinterested and his batting needs to improve LEACH-7.5 had a good series helped us win the test with Stokes i still think his bowling needs to improve for test level BROAD-9 in the absence of his partner he was absolute brilliant opening the bowling Warner didn't have a clue how to play him boy did i love that
i would also bring FOAKES in my squad has wicket keeper and if BAIRSTOW returns to form i would add him only as a batsman

Regarding the above, kind of agree about Denley. He did play two very good innings, the last one plus the key partnership with Root at Headingley which set the foundations for Stokes. On that basis he's probably earned more time because he did show some bottle, but I'm not convinced he's got it either. Same with Buttler, I don't see him as a specialist bat but he had a good last match. I like Curran, he's a baller and makes things happen, he needs to step up a level with either bat or ball to win a regular spot. The captaincy from both captains wasn't great, but Aus clearly have the bigger issues there. Paine is a nice guy but was ludicrously bad with DRS and made some poor decisions (won't go on about bowling first again!), plus did nothing of note with the bat. They ain't far away though, Warner won't have to face Broad for a while, Labuschagne was the second best batsman in the series (although needs to convert these 80's in to big ones), the bowling attack is top notch, especially Cummins. And of course the best batsman in the world, by far. We need to find the answers to our problems at 2 and 3, and possibly 5! We can't rely on our bowling to save us every time. Brilliant summer, sad it's over. For all of Smith's batting, Stokes' heroics, the great bowling by both teams, this was one of my favourite moments of the entire summer 😂 m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=10156188701230194&id=19390830193&sfnsn=moWhen does the next one start?..

1. Burns 2. 3. 4. Root 5. Bairstow (without gloves) 6. Stokes (he’s not a 5. He’s good enough to bat anywhere from 3-7 but I think 6 is his spot) 7. Buttler (WK) 8. Woakes 9. Broad 10. Archer 11.
I only see 3 spots you need to fill if Bairstow removes the gloves. You could put him at 3 but I think he’s more valuable at 5. That there is a rock solid 4-7. Ali is a potato against us but he’s your best spinner I think - you can’t pick Leach based on his batting when he’s coming in at 10 or Jack. Either fix Ali’s head or find someone new. Leach could develop into a decent bowler, but he’s not there yet.

Ray i agree with most of what you say unsure about Woakes and Bairstow needs to concentrate just on his batting Anderson still reckons he wants to play but will be 39 and broad will be 35 so no spring chickens apparently though we have a couple of up and coming young uns who can bowl at 90+mph we also have Wood but he is injury prone in regard to a spinner i have doubts about Leach and hopefully Ali can come back from his rest and get something like his best very useful bat also looking forward to seeing who our new coach will be and the tours over the winter

For me Woakes is very similar to Hazlewood but a better batsman. I just think Root doesn’t have the faith in him to bowl him at the right times and puts him behind Stokes in the bowling order when it should be the other way around. He’s one to persevere with, particularly now that Jimmy is possibly done.
Siddle did his hip flexor on day 1. Herculean effort to keep bowling, even though he didn’t bowl great. Will miss the start of the Australian summer because of his efforts when he could have just stopped bowling after the injury.
Wonder if Jimmy regrets not continuing to bowl in the first test with his slightly pulled calf?? 🐈

Hazlewood gets first crack at it, Woakes is 4th in line.
I’d have him.
