now then Ray keep your cool BUT if Smith wasn't playing and the form Warner is in despite your top class bowling attack i am certain this series would be very much alive anyhow on to today we certainly need to bat all day to give us any chance at all and with our fragile batting and the Aussies bowling attack that is going to take some doing so this test is far from over looking at the betting we are 1-3 while Australia are just over 3-1 and i must say i am tempted at those odds but i backed Australia before and won so i will leave it i don't want to put the mockers on us again so IF we can bat all day that should give us a lead of over 300 the very minimum we will need PS i agree with your comment about Warner and i wouldn't rule out a good last innings from him but Ray i know you hate it BUT Smith was a cheat and because he is the best batsman in the world will always be remembered for it and that is a shame because batsman like him don't come around very often

Don't get so defensive Ray! It's just opinions...
It's not a "one man team" thing like the rest of Australia team is shit, it's more in terms of how much better he is than your other batters, and in comparison to England. He is BY FAR the standout batter, and without him can not see how it wouldn't have changed the whole series.
If you're gonna call Stokes' innings "lucky," then Smith was lucky leach bowled a no ball, because that was unquestionably match changing. Anyone can play that game!
And I'm not having that your bowling is "much" better. Archer has the best average, broad has been consistently dangerous, both teams have other guys who've contributed and moments where they've leaked runs. Australia's bowling has been more consistent, and that's impressive, and has had an impact on the series, but not "much" better...

You don’t have a spinner of note. We have the best spinner in the world over the last 2 years at test level. Starc hasn’t been given a chance because of the depth we have. Pattinson would walk into your side. Archer has been awesome twice, and ok the rest of the time. He’s very tight though, which bodes well for his future. He may one day be the number one test bowler like Pat Cummings is. Broad has delivered as expected, with the bonus of his Warner party tricks. Add Hazlewood. Remove Siddle and replace him with Jye Richardson who started his career brilliantly.
Stokes rode his luck beyond one lucky or unlucky shot. Playing like that on a last day wicket was brilliant because it was so aggressive, but he rode his luck for sure.
Wasn’t angry when I posted, just a lil frustrated at the seeming end of the ‘was he right to bowl’ discussion and laps of honour about it when we’ve had the best of the conditions so far. You’ll need to bat till halfway through tomorrow to make us bat on a pitch that’s terrible - in which case I’ll admit he should have played it differently. A batting failure doesn’t decide whether batting was right or wrong when it’s not the pitch that caused it. I’m not being parochial, I’m saying I think it was right based on my experience.

Lol Ray, I think someone has yellow and green tinted glasses on! 😂
Please explain how Australia win any match in this series without Smith? Look at the scorecards! Joe Denley has more runs than every Aussie batter bar Smith and Labuschane. Joe fucking Denley. And yes your front two bowlers are very good, but clearly so are ours! Archer is statistically the best bowler on either team. And then I'll try and explain how we win at Headingley without Stokes! Oh, and Tim Paine 🤣
On balance Australia deserve to retain the Ashes. We would love to make it 2-2 so at least you don't win the series, and then remember you were only saved by the weather at Lords. Remember that one Ray?
Another interesting day coming up, we'll miss it when it's over.

I see what you're getting at with the toss decision, but again everyone's got an opinion.
The rest is all very debatable, in my opinion, and add to that it's England v Australia, one of the oldest and most passionate rivalries sport has, and of course it's gonna get fiery.
Just don't take it personal mate, we all like you 😘

Ha, we don't have a spinner of note?! Maybe not, but what has Lyon done since Edgbaston? I'd have Cummins and Hazlewood, the rest you can keep!

(And admit you should have batted first...🤣)

“One man team” is obviously a bit of banter... so it’s funny to see it stick in your craw Ray 😂
Jamie’s already done a good job of pointing to the stats - there’s no such thing as a one man team - but they’re pretty clear that he has been the difference between the two sides.

I might have to stop poking the bear! 🐻 I can see this match coming down to Curran against Smith, you heard it here first! Denley has a chance to retain his place here, Burns has already done so. I've got a conflict of interests at 3pm, might have to be cricket on the telly and Radio Bristol in the background. You Reds!

Working so will reply later.
The ICC ranking say Lyon is the best test spinner in the last 2 years.
Form is temporary, class is permanent. Apart from Root, when was the last English player ranked in the top 10.
No batsmen have performed, so saying Denley has outperformed our guys isn’t a huge wrap.
Don’t get too wrapped up in Archers stats in a series where no one made runs. We’ll see how he’s going when he’s caught Hazlewood, Starc and Cummings in the rankings and when he’s played in India, the UAE and Sri Lanka like out guys have to get to the top (or near) of the rankings.
We don’t pick test players without first class experience so he wouldn’t have made the squad for us. Root would have based on previous feats (like Warmer was) so would Stokes and Broad.

We've all drooled over how good Cummins and Hazelwood are, maybe we should've been more restrained, given how crap our batters are and given away a lot of our wickets...
If archer isn't a very highly ranked bowler after another 10-20 tests, I'll eat my hat...

I agree, but potential and results are different things. Great timing with Jim breaking down.

Broad, archer, Cummins and Hazelwood have all performed very well, with their averages helped by poor batting.
I don't think people are getting "wrapped up" in archer's average, they're comparing his wickets taken and average to the other quality bowlers and saying he's holding his own with the best bowlers.
Can't see how that's an unrealistic take...
