That's the thing though, our tail is great, it's the batters who are the problem! Can't understand Buttler at 5. I like him a lot as a player but for me he's a wicket keeper batsman. If he's not keeping is he good enough to be a specialist batsman? No. Of the two maybe Bairstow is, but as it is now it's like we're playing with 2 wicket keepers! Surely there's a middle order batsman waiting for a chance somewhere?
Good batting from Woakes (again) and Bairstow, not quite out of the hole but maybe half way up. Young Archer HAS to have something to bowl at otherwise the Aussies are going to attack him mercilessly. They will know this is their chance to hit him out of the series.

Bairstow was a gun as a specialist batsman against us. Not sure why he even took the gloves.
300 is possible from here. Woakes is better with the bat than I gave him credit for.

Well, Broad certainly seems to have Warner's number. Archer will take care of Smith!

Impressed by Archers spell.
England total probably 50 short but it could have been worse....
Think we will get a result despite the lost day

Could've been much worse - sloppy batting as you boys say - but rescued by that Bairstow/Woakes partnership. Game still on.

I do not understand cricket. At all. I have friends from India and the West Indies (who are of Indian descent) that follow the game closely - including taking days off from work to watch the Indian National team play in the world cup finals. No one I asked has ever been able to explain even the most basic rules. The game seems anarchic and chaotic, and I never have any idea what's going on. This is my complete understanding of the game: A guy with the ball gets a running start and throws the ball toward a stick. A guy on the other team has a long, flat paddle and hits the ball in basically any direction, including backward. If the ball is hit over a fence, it's called a "six" and I suppose the team gets six points. This is seemingly a common occurrence. When it doesn't happen, fielders try to catch the ball and the guy with the paddle runs back and forth, seemingly forever. I have no idea how the defense can stop the offense, and I have no idea how teams accumulate points or when they switch roles. A bit like American Football, it's actually a pretty simple game with lots of complicated little nuances within it. Once you've got the simple basics you can start enjoying the game, and as you watch it you start picking up on the more complicated bits. Test cricket can probably seem quite slow and boring compared to the one day versions to an outsider, but for most cricket fans it's the purest and best form of the game. Batsmen get much less protection, they are bombarded physically and mentally, any weakness will be worked on and exposed. (We're still trying to find Smith's...) You have to have some pretty large testicles to stand there and stay in line with some of these quicks steaming in at you, knowing there's a good chance the next ball is likely to be aimed somewhere around your throat if you've already shown yourself to be a bit susceptible to a short ball. Wicket keeper and slips are telling you that, chirping away in your ear, bowler is giving you a bit of lip too and a few stares. Fun
Your description made me laugh though, thanks for that!

Fun Sledging is absolutely the best bit about cricket I know it's frowned upon, but imho it's fair game - the battle in the middle is a mind-game more than it is a physical one. Pressure & the art of applying it is everything in test cricket. Poor quality but there are some peachy examples of the craft in here...

You can only imagine how I went sledging. Cranking it up around 75-80, thinking i was 90-95...
I once surprised a teammate by sledging the bowers full on when I was batting. Fielders aren’t allowed to talk when the bowler is on their way in, noone said anything about the batsman lol.
Only happened once.
You’ve had the best of the conditions. You batted in bright sunshine, we’ve batted in perfect swing bowling conditions.
Welcome Jacko, appreciate the move over 👍
C’mon, you guys must admit you’re going to need a bit of luck to match us over 5 tests. Even if our batting is equal, which it isn’t, we’re a mile ahead with the pill.

Reckon I’ve said 3or 4 times Head has looked better than Smith the twice they were together. Same again.
DAMMIT. 3 innings, 3 Jaffa’s for Head. That kept low like the one that got Root.

I would think that's it for today. Could still get a result in this one, first session tomorrow will decide which way that result could go.

That’s a shame.
First question you ask as an umpire is did it pitch outside leg if it’s a left handed batsman. Stokes would need to bowl a near Yorker to pitch one in line and hit the stumps with the action he has. Wade was never close to out. Dar is a shocker nowadays. Even if his feet are close to the umpire, he leans back and bowls from quite wide. He’s almost the opposite of Malinga, who could almost pitch them outside the leg stump of a right hander from over the stumps and have it go on to hit. Shaun Taiit and Thommo from the 70’s were the same.

Yeah not looking good for more play today. But we're defo back in it - can't believe the umpire initially gave that Broad lbw not out I think they call that an "ordinary decision" over in Australia! If we can get Smith out relatively cheaply tomorrow, think we'll have a shot - but suspect the weather is going to get this test - tomorrow looks ok, but Sunday has a chance of more rain.
