Gotta love those search bots. Used to have a vBulletin forum years ago. Way back when Kobi Bryant had his scandal and the news was breaking I made a thread in the "news" forum about it. Happened to be when google was crawling my site. I got hammered with guests, hundreds upon hundreds. And a warning from my host that I was going to have to upgrade my plan because the traffic was impacting other site owners on the server.
For the 1'st few weeks if you searched Kobi my forum came up 1'st in the list. So like a good forum owner I am, I edited my original post where google was sending people who searched about him to include a welcome to all guests and an invite to join.
Unrelated kind of. There was this one mod that you could install. (TomBot v1.1 vB AI User Bot...had to google the name to remember it) It was a talking bot. You install it, give it a username just like a regular person and assign which forums it could talk in. I put it in the one forum and it was hilarious to watch people try and figure out what kind of drugs the person was on. Bot would try and look like it was part of the conversation but the things it said were odd. Kind of like running through a post very broken translator. Had this one old lady who was very computer illiterate (once asked someone in the forum, in a forum post to put a link to the forum in a post so she could add it to her favorites). Watching this poor old lady try and have a conversation with the bot was gold. Lot of fun was had with that little bot lol.
