Yep, same old. We are at least 2 proper batsmen short. Root isn't a 3, Stokes isn't a 4, Buttler is nowhere near good enough to play as a specialist batsman. Time for some new blood.
In an ideal world we should be:
Burns someone else someone else Root someone else Stokes Bairstow or Buttler (w/k) bowlers
This line up will never be good enough. We're still not out of this test match because with 2 exceptions our bowlers have had the Aussie batsmen on a plate too. Surely Smith has to fail eventually? Hasn't he?....

I suggested a page or three back that we give pope and Sibley a go. Not amazing stats, but time to pick the right type of player, give them an extended run, and hope they come good. Also think taking the gloves off bairstow might improve him. Put foakes in there. Give that a go for 2 (one and a half) years and see how next ashes goes...

Smith will be chasing records. He doesnt get bored batting, he gets bored when he’s not. I think we’re in almost perfect shape. I did t want our openers out there tonite. It did swing a bit, but the pitch looks mundane. Warmers due, so is Harris. Marsh will get runs on the back of the wickets.
I hope.

A small first innings defecit isn't the end of the world because they have to bat last thanks to that bonehead decision yesterday morning. Every run is a bonus from here, and then we get to enjoy Broad v Warner again. Don't blink though, you might miss it 🤣

If you gave the gloves to Buttler then Bairstow could slot in to that number 5. We have to find a 2 and 3 though from somewhere. Only problem is, apparently Bairstow throws a big hissy fit if they take the gloves off him.

Buttler would be dropped, and if bairstow wants to throw a fit, buttler could come back in. Top order spots would go to Sibley and pope. My idea is probably too radical and they won't do it, but all of those I've said have been suggested elsewhere; I just put all the possible changes together, how I wanted them...

It’s looking pretty mundane out there with a new pill.
Decent time to bat.
Boneheaded decision or not will be decided after we’ve both batted once. Anything else is speculation/hope.

These are those 2 batsmen I was on about, we must find a way! Look at the bright side ray, at least Warner didn't get out to Broad again! 😂

I was glad of that lol. None of our openers delivered or even resisted, I hope they go back to Renshaw -I didn’t think he did anything wrong on his first go in the team to get dropped. I’d stick with Harris for the first test of the summer, probably Warner as well then pull the trigger if they fail.
Joffra’s bowling well. I still think we’re getting the best of the conditions, which is what you want when you win a toss. Could have been a lot different at 8-220 but you finished fairly well.

Surely Smith has to fail eventually? Hasn't he?.... Apparently not I don't know the stats but I'd bet this is the best single series batting display ever... & he missed 20% of his opportunities! Career wise, he's just on another planet... stats.espncricinfo.com/wi/content/records/282910.html

It's that man again. Honestly ray you can protest all you like. These are two very evenly matched teams with one very notable exception. In fact, considering your 'stellar' bowling line up you could argue England have actually batted better! Labiashane has been very good, Steve Smith is about 10 levels up on anyone else in the series. He is the difference. We need someone to find that magic ball and we could have a first innings lead here, bat properly and then bowl on a turning wicket in the 4th. Good job we won the toss! Oh wait....

By the way, did you see the stat that England's first wicket stand of 27 in this match was the highest by either team in the entire series!! The average is now back in single figures.

Also, adulation/frustration at Steve Smith aside, what a brilliantly poised test match! Absolutely even at this stage I'd say. The weather forecast is glorious (got my shorts on in Bristol ), we could be in for a bit of a treat here. This is no dead match, the Ashes aren't coming home but leveling the series would give us a lot of cheer.
